New freshman ASA senators share goals

The fall Augustana Student Association elections have concluded with four elected freshman senators, including Susana Gebrekidan, Abbey Allen and Emma Powers. These senators share their goals and expectations for ASA in the 2022-2023 school year.

Susanan Gebrekidan

Hometown: Sioux Falls, S.D.

Why did you run for ASA?

I wanted to run for ASA because I am an international relations and government major, so I wanted to apply my leadership skills, but what gave me the courage to run is the fact that there weren’t many people who look like me that were running, so I was motivated to be someone that stepped up.

What are your goals this year?

This year, my goals are to be more organized, to have fun and, most importantly, be more loving to myself.

What are you looking forward to most on ASA?

I look forward to continuing to learn about being a leader and hopefully working on more things related to curriculum and diversity on this campus.

Abbey Allen

Hometown: Madison, S.D.

Why did you run for ASA?

I ran for ASA because I want to help make the changes that I see need to happen on campus. Talking to people is one of my favorite things to do, and because of this, I think I can communicate well with the class of 2026 to address issues vital to us.

What are your goals this year?

Some of my goals for this year include working to make women’s resources on campus more accessible. There is also much to be done on campus regarding sustainability and campus safety.

What are you looking forward to most on ASA?

I look forward to making a difference on campus and enacting changes that will better the college experience for all AU students.

Emma Powers

Hometown: I’m the daughter of a Marine, so I’ve lived everywhere, but Sioux Falls for three years.

Why did you run for ASA?

I care about people. I want to represent my class and help connect them to amazing opportunities and the resources we need to be successful as we start this new chapter of college. I sense we are change-makers, and I’m ready to be a part of that.

What are your goals this year?

I am very passionate about mental health awareness and want to contribute to the mental wellness of our community. I’m also very flexible and open to new opportunities to serve well on ASA. A personal goal — participating in run club.

What are you looking forward to most on ASA?

Learning more about the opportunities available, sharing them and creating a meaningful college experience for people on campus. I’m excited to brainstorm and collaborate with ASA members and other students, too.
