Men’s cross-country set for nationals

The No. 6 Augustana men’s cross-country team won its fifth straight Central Region championship Nov. 5 at Yankton Trails Park, just edging No. 10 Missouri Southern State, 68-65, for the title.

Seniors Glen Ellingson and Keegan Carda finished third and fourth, respectively, to pace Augustana. Nathan Hauge (11th), Jesus Urtusuastegui (14th) and Nathan Schroeder (33rd) rounded out the scoring for Augustana.

The Vikings advanced to the NCAA Championships, which will be Saturday at 7:30 a.m. CST in St. Leo, Fla.

It will be the eighth straight national meet for the Vikings, having finished in the nation’s top-10 seven years in a row.

The Viking women finished eighth at the regional meet and did not qualify for the national championships.

Heid, Heller finish season among Division II’s best

matt-hellerAugustana senior quarterback Trey Heid and senior wide receiver Matt Heller ended their illustrious careers Saturday in a 35-20 win at Southwest Minnesota State.

Heid threw for 264 yards and four touchdowns, three of which went to Heller, who caught six passes for 137 yards.

Heid led Division II in total offense with 4,303 yards, finished fourth in passing yards (3,582) and threw 41 touchdowns, good for second in the country. Heller finished second nationally in receiving yardage (1,509) and touchdown catches (21).

Heid named Player of the Year; 10 Vikings earn All-NSIC honors

Augustana senior quarterback Trey Heid was named the NSIC Offensive Player of the Year ontrey-heid Wednesday.

Senior receivers Matt Heller and Charlie Hayes, senior defensive end Bryson Hamilton and sophomore linebacker Kirby Hora were all named to the All-NSIC South Division First Team, along with Heid.

Sophomore linebacker Matt Wagner and senior left tackle Kyle Griffin were named to the second team, while senior offensive linemen Sam Lee and Chris Mathieu were named All-NSIC Honorable Mention, along with sophomore defensive lineman Joey Newman.
